"The Literacy Factor in Reproductive Change: A Study of Women's Schooling in Four Countries"

Dr. LeVine’s extensive research probes the influence of culture on parenthood, childhood development, and adult personality in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He also has examined the influence of maternal schooling on reproduction and infant care in urban Mexico and Nepal. Overall, this work has brought the integrative and social theory-based perspectives of psychological anthropology to bear on issues of global importance, regarding education, temperament, fertility, and child health and survival. His many influential monographs and edited books include Culture, Behavior and Personality (1973), Culture Theory: Essays on Mind, Self, and Emotion (1984), Childcare and Culture: Lessons from Africa (1994), Japanese Frames of Mind: Cultural Perspectives on Human Development (2001), and Childhood Socialization: Comparative Studies of Parents, Learning and Educational Change (2003).
