Biographies

Biographical Directory of Anthropologists born before 1920 1988, Garland Press
Ref. Z5111 .B56 1988
Anthropologists are arranged in alphabetical order. Each entry provides birth and death dates, the country of origin and a brief description of the anthropologist's contributions. Check EUCLID for our holdings.

Biography and Genealogy Master Index 1980, Gale Research Co.
Ref. Desk Z5305 .U5 B57
One of the best places to start for biographical research: this index provides leads to both current and retrospective biographical sources. It does not have a name authority file, so entries are taken 'as is' from the original source. Be prepared to look up names with one or both initials and even variant spellings. Some editions are annotated, alternately, use EUCLID to find the call numbers for sources indicated.

Contemporary Authors 1975, Gale Research Co.
Ref. PN771 .C59 and .C61
Many academic writers are indexed in the several hundred volumes of this set. Use the annually updated author index (Ref. Desk PN771 .C61) to find an entry on a specific author. 'NR' distinguishes the new revised series from the original set. Go to t he volumes in the reference collection to find your author. Each entry contains biographical information, addresses, interests, bibliographies.

Dictionaries

A Student's dictionary of language and linguistics
Ref. P29 .T737 1997
In 'Notes to the Reader', R.L. Trask provides a charming and meticulously organized outline of the dictionary's scope, upon which no annotation could improve. Use this if you are new to linguistics, and expect 'particularly careful coverage of the ter miniology of traditional grammar', definitions from general linguistics, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, language evolution, computational linguistics, professional academics, as well as 'the most important terms encountered in using the Interne t'. Also, 'the dictionary is fully up to date'.

Dictionary of linguistics and phonetics 4th ed, 1997, B. Blackwell
Ref. P29 .C65 1997

Dictionary of logic as applied in the study of language: concepts, methods, theories 1981, M. Nijhoff
BC9 .D48

A Dictionary of Phonetics and Phonology 1996, Routledge
Ref. P216 .T73 1996
As in A Student's dictionary of language and linguistics Trask's preface provides detailed scope notes. There are 2,000 terms which include articulatory, acoustic and perceptual phonetics

Glossary of Linguistic Terminology 1966, Columbia University Press
Ref. P29 .P39
Initially an important contribution in 1966, this could be the researcher's last resort for a definition. This glossary offers several clear definitions for each term and indicates the original author by his or her lastname in parentheses. This potent ially helpful inclusion puts the dictionary outside the use of the novice, as it presumes familiarity with linguistics scholarship: there is no bibliography or even reference to the author's complete name in the glossary itself. Good luck to the user!.

Longman dictionary of language teaching and applied linguistics 2nd ed, 1992, Longman
Ref. P29 .R52 1992
This dictionary, designed for both the novice and experienced linguist, includes pronunciation, illustrations, see-also and cross references, as well as recommendations for further reading at the end of most entries-- a particularly nice attribute in a dictionary. Refer to the bibliography at the end of the book for complete citations.

Multilingual Lexicon of Linguistics and Philology: English, Russian, German, French 1968, University of Miami Press
Ref. P29 .N34
Arranged alphabetically according to 5,000 English language terms, chosen for their frequency, relevance and difficulty.

Compendium of the World's langages 2 vols, 1991, Routledge
Ref. P371 .C36 1991
This does not look like a traditional encyclopedia since much of the information is in outline form. However, it does provide lengthy overviews on each of the world's major languages, including the language's evolution, the population who speaks it, a nd something of its geographic distribution. Linguists and other researchers will appreciate the uniform entries on all aspects of the language's script, phonology, morphology and syntax. There is an appendix of scripts in volume 2, as well as a lengthy bibliography.

The many black and white illustrations and diagrams make these volumes inviting to the browser. Extensive bibliographies are helpful to scholars.

International Encyclopedia of Linguistics 1992, Oxford Univeristy Press
Ref. P29 .I58 1992
Like its companion encyclopedia for communications, this work is pleasantly illustrated and inviting to any researcher. It also provides detailed articles on all aspects of linguistics scholarship. A glossary is found at the beginning of volume 4.

The Linguistics Encyclopedia 1991, Routledge
Ref. P29 .L52 1991
Start with the index on page 543, since it will direct you to specific terms embedded and defined in the articles, as well as the titles of the articles themselves. The book is arranged into broader overviews, with some terms cross-referenced in each listing. Bibliographies are at the end of each article, with an extensive bibliography at the end of the book.

The World's Writing Systems 1996, Oxford University Press
Ref. P211 .W714 1996
This is a fascinating and scholarly volume, whether you're a student or professional linguist. Most of the material is arranged in broad geographic/linguistic groupings and includes lengthy articles on different kinds of script, usually with tables of examples and diagrams. Each article includes a lengthy bibliography. Other articles cover important evolutionary topics, like the "Transmission of the Phoenician script to the West" or the "Use and Adaptation of Scripts". Introduction to Library Research in Anthropology 2nd ed, 1998, Westview
Ref. Z5111.W44 1998
If you wanted to do library research in cultural anthropology without ever consulting a librarian, this is the book for you. Weeks' book starts with a thoughtful overview of the field, followed by individual chapters detailing different kinds of sourc es including archives, databases, internet sites as well as conventional information sources like indexes and abstracting services, regional bibliographies and library of congress subject headings. Sources specific to anthropology like the Human Relat ions Area Files and Murdoch's indexes are explained clearly. The library's copy is annotated with Emory's call numbers, however, if you are a current graduate student or a major considering graduate school, consider buying your own. It's that useful.

Human Relations Area Files

The Human Relations Area Files are a compilation of ethnographies indexed by HRAF at Yale University. Though often used to identify resources on a particular culture, HRAF is one of the only sources which indexes traits across cultures. Category 19*, 'Language', for example, includes aspects of speech, vocabulary, grammar, phonology, stylistics, semantics, linguistic identification and special languages-- however, other OCM categories may also apply. Most researchers supplement their work with H RAF by referring to other reference materials, such as Anthropological Literature or Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts.

The library has a yellow guide entitled Human Relations Area Files Collection of Ethnography which lists each culture included and indicates whether the materials are in either CD-ROM or microfiche format. A comprehensive search requires you to use both.

To identify materials on a particular culture:
Look up the code for the culture you are researching in the Outline of World Cultures Ref. AS36 .H84 M8. Check the code in the yellow handout Human Relations Area Files Collection of Ethnography to see which formats you will be us ing. In Microfiche 848, simply use the code to find your fiche. Category 11 lists the bibliography of the materials indexed for that culture. For CD-88 in the Beck Center, be sure to insert the correct installment to find materials on your culture.

To identify materials on a particular trait:
Look up the code for the trait you are researching in the index at the end of the Outline of Cultural Materials Ref. AS36 .H84 O8. Notice that the outline works like a thesaurus and helps to identify related traits. Microfiche 851 is th e Index to the Human Relations Area Fileswhich uses the code identified in the Outline of Cultural Materials to list the culture, the author and the page of the source which contains relevant material. Go to the culture and then find the cod e within it. For CD-88, search each installment by OCM category by pulling down the book menu and clicking on search forms. The system defaults to a search by keyword; to see other search options, click on the down arrow by "standard" and select '1.A OC M'. Type in your catagory code to search.

Annual. Specifically covers social and cultural anthropology. Along with the other three volumes covering economics, political science and sociology, the International Bibliography of the Social Sciences covers over 2,500 journals and some 20,0 00 books each year in its indexes. The exhaustive researcher will notice that many of these titles are not indexed in other sources here at Emory, and include important literature from Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Russia and Eurasia. A classific ation scheme towards the front of the volume indicates the arrangement. There are author, placename and subject indexes at the end of each volume.

Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts 1973-date, University of Michigan
P1 .L4
This index is also available on the Research Databases on Information Commons workstations. It provides non-evaluative abstracts of articles from approximately 2,000 serials published around the world, complemented with coverage of recent books, monog raphs, technical reports, occasional papers, enhanced dissertation listings and bibliographic citations for book reeviews that appear in journals abstracted for LLBA.
