Welcome to a new way of looking at hormones and ecology. RECOLAB, the Laboratory of Reproductive Ecology and Environmental Toxicology, is part of a growing community of scholars focusing on the mechanisms by which the environment influences endocrine physiology. This research includes investigations of endocrine disruptors, environmental pollutants that may alter development by virtue of resemblances to endogenous hormones, as well as studies of the evolution and adaptive function of endocrine differences between species. These new approaches cross the traditional disciplinary boundaries between laboratory and field sciences and require new methods that apply molecular and biochemical approaches to field investigations of behavior and reproduction in their adaptive context.
Our MissionTo determine the effects of the environment on the regulation, ontogeny, and evolution of endocrine systems.
Laboratory ProfileWe conduct research in field endocrinology, reproductive ecology, and environmental toxicology. We develop and provide assay services in noninvasive endocrine methods and carry out experimental studies of phytoestrogen action. RECOLAB is one of the research laboratories of Emory University's Department of Anthropology. We have over ten years of experience with field endocrinology and phytoestrogen research. The founder and director of RECOLAB is Dr. Pat Whitten,Professor of Anthropology at Emory.
