Fecal Cortisol Reflects Stressful Events in Chimpanzees

A new tool to assess stress and animal well-being

Because excreted steroids reflect steroid secretion over a number of hours, it has been unclear whether fecal cortisol could be used to assess the stressfulness of a relatively brief event.  Our recently published study shows that fecal cortisol rises threefold following anesthesia in chimpanzees, resembling the elevation we observed in urinary cortisol.
