Phytoestrogens
Phytoestrogens Field Endocrinology

Phytoestrogens are plant chemicals that mimic the structure and actions of vertebrate estrogens.  As estrogens, these natural dietary components have the potential to prevent cancer and supplement falling estrogen levels in postmenopausal women, but also might alter sexual differentiation and reduce fertility. The beneficial and potentially adverse actions of phytoestrogens may help to elucidate the risks posed by hormonally active environmental pollutants.   Our research focuses on the in vivo actions of isoflavonoids and their mechanisms of action.

Potential Significance

A natural means of cancer protection
Dietary methods for estrogen replacement therapy
Investigate actions and potency of endocrine disruptors
Understand the evolution of endocrine systems
