Estrogen and progestin production fluctuates over the ovarian cycle and pregnancy, providing a quantitative method for assessing ovarian cyclicity, ovulation and formation of a corpus luteum, and the progress of gestation. Fecal estradiol or estrone and progesterone or other progestins have proven to be reliable means of assessing ovarian function in primates and other mammals.
The figure shows composite ovarian profiles using fecal estradiol and progesterone (bottom), serum estradiol and progesterone (middle) and sexual swelling ratings in three cycling sooty mangabey females. Major Applications
